Welcome to Not Wasting My Time, a blog that will inspire and motivate you to set some goals and reach for them! I’m Kristy and I’m going to give you glimpse into my life as we head down my personal goal-oriented journey. However, before we get to those all important goals I intend on crushing, let me tell you a bit about myself.
I’m an almost 40 year-old married gal with two boys aged five and six. They are often mistaken for twins, but are actually 15 months apart. No that was not planned, and yes I have often questioned my reasoning behind the timeline. I’m happy to say that after that super tough first year, the journey with two kiddos so close together has been pretty awesome and I’m extremely grateful it all turned out the way it did! For future reference I will refer to them as Cyber-D and Meka-L, in reference to their current favorite board game King of Tokyo.
I’ve been married for 17 years and we landed in Albuquerque, NM almost 7 years ago. Although it was a tough adjustment for this Kansas girl (everything is brown down here!), I’m finally adjusted and am even starting to acquire a taste for green chilies, as long as they aren’t too spicy.
For the first 5 years of our residency in New Mexico I was a stay-at-home mom who really tried to get organized and be one of those “fun moms” who planned weekend adventures, cooked homemade meals each night and attempted to keep our house in a livable state. That all went out the window when I started a full-time job (which I love SO much) but takes up a big portion of my weekdays. As work schedules and activity schedules are starting to get more complicated and frequent, I’ve noticed how my weekend adventures, housekeeping, nightly home-cooked meals and coveted “me” time, are all falling to the wayside due to poor planning, ridiculous distractions and flat-out laziness. I hate putting that out there but it’s the truth, sometimes I’d just rather sit around the house in my pajamas on the weekend instead of actually going after my goals. Sometimes you need those lazy days, but in the past year I’ve found they are far too frequent. So, instead of getting down about it and continuing in the same fashion, I’m going to change my ways. Please help me hold myself accountable, dear reader!
I’ve toyed with the idea of starting a blog for several years, but it wasn’t until now that I finally got motivated to go after ALL of my goals (and I do have quite a few with more brewing in the back of my mind.) This past year I’ve heard countless times from my co-workers how efficient they think I am, and how I’m always able to accomplish so much, so quickly. Such nice things to hear! Deep down I was a little ashamed because I felt that after I left for the day I was bummed out that my personal life wasn’t nearly as kept up to the standards I had set for myself at my job. As I was hitting my stride getting back into the workforce I found myself losing patience with my kids faster, clutter building up, healthy eating habits slowly deteriorating and our new home we just bought and moved into, slowly accumulating things that didn’t bring me any happiness.
Things need to change and I’m on a mission to make it happen! Over the past couple of years I’ve found a few systems that have worked for me at both my home and office that help me get more accomplished in a shorter amount of time. They are nothing too extraordinary or new, but they seem to work for me and I can usually get things knocked off my list if I set my daily goals early and stay on track. I’m going to share what works for me in this blog as well as experiment because we all need a little variation to our routines to keep us effective and to stave off boredom! After setting my initial list of goals I was delighted to see that they fit nicely into roughly four categories of my life- how convenient!
Below are the topics I will be blogging about here at NotWastingMyTime.com, they are each associated with a movie quote because movies are one of my passions and a major pillar in my marriage. Perhaps more on that later, but without further ado-my life broken down into sections:
Home Life /“There’s No Place Like Home” I’m sure this category is self-explanatory, but basic topics here will include: meal-planning, home organization, fitness (I’m not hardcore enough for this to need its own section) and whatever else may fall into a day-to-day living situation. I’m sure you understand how encompassing this category is, I don’t want to lump everything here, but it most likely will be a broad range of topics. That may sound boring, but on the plus side I do have a lot of tips and tricks to help out in this area-so stay tuned!
Adventures/“Life Moves Pretty Fast” If you got that partial quote, we might be movie soulmates! If not, here’s the rest- “If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” Did you get it? My fellow 80’s/90’s kids will probably recognize that gem from Ferris Buller’s Day Off. This category will follow all of my goals related to trips, festivals, hiking and whatever other kinds of crazy things I drag my family into. This is one of the main reasons I started this whole thing, so that I could make sure my kiddos can look back at their childhood and have good memories. Also, so that I can look back and not have any regrets because I didn’t take enough chances.
Personal Development/“We are who we choose to be.” That quote is from the original Spider-Man back in 2002. Even though this is a quote from the Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe, it still resonates with me. For the past decade, I feel like I’ve been going down a path of personal awakening. That sounds very new age-y, but it is what it is. I’ve read countless self-help books and am always trying to improve my life, so this category will relate to all such topics.
Writing/“The first key to writing is to write, not think!” A quote from Sean Connery’s character in 2000’s Finding Forrester. I’ve had a goal of writing a book (any kind of book!) for as long as I can remember, but my lack of motivation has always put it in the back corner. No more! I’m going to finish a writing project and that is all there is to it. Here is where I will hold myself accountable and chase that dream.
So that’s it, my blogging journey has officially begun. If you made it to the end of this post, yay! That means I didn’t bore you to death or you are someone I know if real life. Either way, thank you! If you have any ideas, comments or questions I’d love to hear from you.
