This is part of my series about the Seven Hermetic Principles and the 12 Universal Laws. Visit my post Diving into the Universal Laws and Hermetic Principles to find the links to all of the Laws and Principles.
“Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.”—The Kybalion
The Law of Cause and Effect is another law that has many layers. These layers span space and time, but those topics take a lot of set up and explanation. It’s a good law to ponder in the wee hours of the night when you are having trouble falling asleep.
For our purpose, the Law of Cause and Effect simply means that actions have reactions. That may be oversimplifying it, but the Law of Cause and Effect is a lot like Newton’s third law of mechanics (which says that for every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction) the kicker is that the reaction, or effect, doesn’t necessary have to be equal.
There are two ways to think about this law. The first example is the classic dropping a rock into a pond and watching the ripples expand. It’s a perfect illustration given to kids when we are talking about how their actions ripple out and affect others. An action as simple smiling at a stranger can brighten up their day and starts a chain reaction that can reach up to a hundred people. This concept obviously goes both ways, if you go out and kick a person who has fallen down, that would set off a slew of other potentially terrible events.
The Ripple Effect is the most common idea that illustrates the Law of Cause and Effect. It’s definitely good, but here’s something a little more abstract that also demonstrates this law.
I’ve talked a lot about how energy is power and it’s what we use to communicate with the Universe. When you can learn to harness your personal power, your frequency becomes stronger and the Universe responds more.
We live in a society and time where everyone can choose to have a platform to express their thoughts and opinions. Whichever way you choose to look at this, it’s just a fact. It’s also a fact that some people tend to gain more attention and power than others. Those people are putting out a certain frequency to the masses that is easy to tune into. Their messages have their personal intentions behind it, which is what boosts their power. Basically, the people who have influence and power, can sway those who do not. Or better put, those with powerful energetic imprints can overtake those that don’t.
Do you see why it’s very important to have control over your energy? When you have control over your energy, it’s harder for you to be influenced because you are blocking out or bypassing frequency’s that are not aligned with you. When you are open and go about without intention, then anything and everything has an opportunity to have it’s energetic voice heard by you.
Now, it’s easier for some to block out energy than others due to various things. If you have ever looked at Human Design, you can see that some of the undefined areas are more prone to energetic influence, or there are definitely some circumstances that leave one open to outside influences. Here’s the thing though, everyone is in charge of their energy, that includes protecting it and emitting the frequency you want it to emit.
How do you protect your energy make sure you are not opening yourself up to an energetic infiltration?
1. Pay attention and check in on your intention. We talked about intentions way back with the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. So why again? It’s that important! I would even say it’s more important these days because it’s so easy to get distracted and lose track of time.
I’m not the only one who has popped onto Instagram, Pinterest or Facebook and lost hours immersing myself in other people’s lives. That’s just me giving away my energy to them, how crazy is that?! It’s important to keep a clear vision of what it is you want and at least some idea of how you are going to get there. Will I stop scrolling through Instagram entirely? I would really like to, and it’s something I’m working on. What I do now is try to set a timer and pay attention to what I’m doing before it gets away from me. We’re all human and we all need breaks, but we don’t need to scroll for hours or watch more cookie decorating videos- that is not the way to reach those goals and keep our energy in alignment!
2. Be present. Every intellectual and spiritual smart person on the planet has said this at some point. That’s because it’s very important. Being present and being still helps to harness your energy so you can protect it and send it out to do great things.
3. Stop multi-tasking. It makes complete sense to multi-task, especially as a female because we are naturally amazing at it. However, it’s hard to change a tire properly if you are juggling knives at the same time.
When you don’t focus your attention on the task at hand, you can’t give it your full energy and therefore best effort. Is it necessary to give your full energy and attention to taking out the trash or loading the dishwasher? Probably not, but when you practice focusing on the task at hand, it’s easier to focus when you need to do the big things.
I’m an über multi-talker. I make dinner, while doing my to-do list for the week and listening to a podcast at the same time. That seems pretty tame compared to some other women I know. Here’s the thing with multi-tasking though, it’s really freaking hard to turn off and can even become a weird addiction. As in, I was having a hard time going on a walk and not feeling guilty because I wasn’t listening to an audiobook and learning something. Or, I wasn’t enjoying that movie with my boys because I was too busy making out the grocery list for the upcoming week. As for meditation? It was nearly impossible because I had trained my mind to always run through lists. We have got to stop this madness!
This tip ties into the first and second, and even though I’m right there with you in thinking that it’s tough because there is so much that needs to happen and not enough time. That’s crazy pants!
I have found in just the past month, that if I write out a list of what I want to do at the beginning of the week, then break it down into five mini- lists to get done-the world doesn’t implode. Here’s the thing, our lists will never get done because we will forever find something new to add-it’s human nature, so why kill ourselves in the process? Be present, and stop multi-tasking. If your energy is aligned, everything that needs to get done will get done because that’s universal law. If it doesn’t get done at the time you want it, that’s just another exercise in letting go. No worries, the Universe has your back.
