This is part of my series about the Seven Hermetic Principles and the 12 Universal Laws. Visit my post Diving into the Universal Laws and Hermetic Principles to find the links to all of the Laws and Principles.
The Law of Correspondence is really one of the deepest and most complex of the laws. Easy to comprehend, but very difficult to practice right off the bat.
The Law of Correspondence, per the Kybalion, “As above, so below; as below, so above.”
I’m sure you may have heard another version, “As above, so below; as within, so without.” This one seems to resonate with me better because I like to think that what is on the inside is reflected on the outside.
Being as this law/principle is one of the deepest and towards the top of your inner pyramid, it’s one that will take work on a personal level. In other words, to become aligned with this law you won’t be able to “fake it ’til you make it.’
If changing your perspective and outlook on any given situation is one of the first steps that you’ve taken in your mindset shift then take heart, because you are already on your way.
The Universal Laws are something that should be known to everyone, because they are just as important as the Law of Gravity. Unfortunately, we don’t currently live in a society where the Universal Laws are taught, so we are having to not only hunt them down, we also need to learn how to integrate them into our lives. The Law of Correspondence will start to play out naturally, and you’ll find yourself falling into alignment when you first start to reprogram the way you see the world and then start following your intuition instead of how society has influenced you to live.
Back to the Law of Correspondence. When I first started meditating on this law, and really trying to embody what it means, I had a thought that made perfect sense to me. The Law of Correspondence is pretty much like the Mirror of Erised from the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Do you remember that super cool magical object that showed Harry’s truest desires?
I thought that was one clever bit of magic and often wondered what I would see in the mirror if I had a chance. These are things I think about while doing my dishes.
Dumbledore said that the happiest man in the world would only see himself when he looked into the mirror. Think of the Law of Correspondence as a real life Mirror of Erised, but you don’t get the luxury of actually seeing what your truest desire is.
“As above, so below; as within, so without.” That means that whatever vibe you are giving off is going to reflect what you get back. Is that similar to the Law of Attraction? Yes, and no. You can read all about that law in another post, but know that the Law of Correspondence is much deeper and takes much more work on a much deeper level.
The Law of Correspondence is what works for you when you are absolutely in alignment with the Universe and don’t even realize what your inner most desires are. Much like the Mirror of Erised.
I’ve often had talks with my husband about this very subject as well as the Law of Attraction and manifestation in general. I come at the angle that “life is a game” and we should look at the concept of manifestation as something to experiment with. We debate and he always ends with, “I just want what’s best for our boys, and I know the Universe is always looking out for that. If I keep my focus on the fact that I just want what’s best for them, I know everything will fall into place.” Sweet, right?
Well, it was frustrating the first couple of times we had that conversation, but when I really started to think about any material items that I may want or where I wanted to go to when traveling, I could never settle on something that I could visualize or embody. When it came right down to it, his simple want to the Universe fell into the exact alignment of what I wanted. It’s something that I can feel when I envision them playing happily or cuddling next to me while watching a movie, so I can always hold that feeling inside. Since that is what truly I want, and can embody that feeling, I know that the Universe will put me on whatever path is best for them and me because of the Law of Correspondence.
The Law of Correspondence demands us to look deep, deep within ourselves in order to clear away all of those things that no longer serve us energetically. We need to look at what triggers us, what makes us afraid, what is holding us back from the life we desire. Unfortunately, it’s a really ugly and tough process. It is zero fun, but highly rewarding. This is what is generally known as “shadow work,” a process that is necessary and painful, but what everyone really truly needs in order to fulfill their greatest lives. Shadow work is a super fascinating subject, one that I won’t go into right now, but you should definitely look into it if you are ready.
How do you get in sync with the Law of Correspondence?
1. What are you hiding from? Such a simple question can generate several jumping off points to start analyzing your psyche. Doing the deep, deep work is ugly, but very revealing. By going here and uncovering what your deepest fears are, and what you’re hiding from you will very unlikely uncover things that you will not want to admit or face.
Journal on this question and see where it leads you. Most of the time this simple prompt will elicit more questions and send you down many little rabbit holes of self-discovery. It’s sometimes painful to expose these parts of ourselves, but once you embrace them instead of hiding from them you can step into your true potential.
2. Be protective of your energy. When we start exposing these deep parts of ourselves, we tend to become a bit energetically depleted. It’s important to release the things that we are holding onto so that we can move forward, but to also be wary of what other energy we are taking on from others.
When you walk into a room, or wake up in the morning with a feeling of heaviness take a moment to ask yourself if this feeling belongs to you or not. Almost always, if the feeling of heaviness isn’t yours then it will fall away, if the feelings do belong to you, then you can analyze it deeper.
If you find yourself struggling with this, then try to visualize yourself in a bubble first thing in the morning. Imagine this bubble surrounding you and deflecting everything that doesn’t belong to you. This simple visualization will help out more than you think.
